Summer Sleep Struggles? What TCM Says About Restless Nights and Overactive Yang

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), summer is dominated by Yang energy—expansive, hot, and active. While this vibrant energy fuels our social lives and productivity, it can also make restful sleep more difficult. Yang governs activity; Yin governs rest. During summer, the balance can tip too far toward Yang, leading to difficulty falling asleep, restless dreams, or waking in the early hours.
To counter this, TCM recommends cultivating Yin habits in the evening during the summer to promote sleep. Start winding down earlier—dim lights, avoid screens, and limit stimulating conversations after sunset. Incorporate calming teas like chrysanthemum, lavender, or longan fruit to nourish the Heart and calm the Shen (spirit).
Avoid excessive sweating or late workouts, as they deplete Yin and body fluids. A warm foot soak with Epsom salt or herbs like mugwort can ground energy and draw it downward. There are several acupuncture points that help anchor the mind and promote deeper sleep. Our providers would be happy to show you how to use acupressure at home on these points. Gently massaging these points before bed can become part of a healing ritual.
While Yang may rule the day, we need Yin to replenish and restore. Honoring this rhythm is key to vibrant health throughout summer. Come on in and let our providers help bring your body into balance and teach you how to incorporate some techniques at home! We also offer online courses through EastWest Connections if some at-home study is needed. We got you!
