Better Sleep with Acupuncture: A Natural Solution for Insomnia

Restful sleep is paramount to health and wellness. Acupuncture can help battle insomnia.
Quality sleep is paramount to overall health and wellbeing.

If you struggle with falling or staying asleep, acupuncture may be the natural solution you need. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views sleep disorders as an imbalance in the body's energy, or Qi, particularly in the heart, liver, and kidney meridians. This doesn't mean that your heart, liver and kidneys are failing. TCM works with the meridian system, and each of these organs have an associated meridian. Your provider will ask you many questions about your lifestyle, health history, and current sleep patterns to get a better idea of which meridians are Involved, and if there are external factors contributing to the problem. They will use acupuncture, herbal medicine, and lifestyle recommendations to help your body heal the underlying issues.

Acupuncture helps regulate melatonin production, calm the nervous system, and promote relaxation. Research shows that acupuncture can also improve sleep quality by reducing anxiety, balancing cortisol levels, and enhancing deep sleep cycles.

Herbs like Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphus) and Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) are commonly used in TCM to promote restful sleep without the side effects of pharmaceuticals. There are many different herbal formulas used that can address various sleep issues: trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, restless sleep, nightmares, etc.

Lifestyle habits such as avoiding screen time before bed, drinking warm herbal teas, journaling, and practicing mindfulness further enhance sleep quality. In many cases, there is an emotional component, possibly related to a past experience, that may need to be addressed as well. In these cases we often consult with or refer to our collaborative network of incredible healthcare providers, including mental health providers.
