Is your low back pain coming from your IT band?

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

Your low back pain may NOT be coming from your low back. Muscle groups work together to facilitate movement by pushing or pulling on the bones where muscles are attached to them. Therefore, if there is an imbalance or misalignment this results in improper movement patterns.

The IT Band provides stability during lateral movements along with the gluteus medius and quadratus lumborum (QL) that stabilize your hip joint. The tension on your IT Band from overuse and friction often causes a downward pull on the glute muscles and QL muscle. This downward pull puts strain on the lumbar spine which could cause compression of the nerves and stress on surrounding muscles leading to low back pain.

How would Acupuncture help?

By decreasing the tension and friction your IT band has from overuse, which then alleviates your back pain.

Acupuncture provides increased circulation to decrease inflammation. Decreased inflammation will decrease tension. The sensation of pain is the result of how our brain process neurological impulses which are increased as a result of inflammation and muscle tension. Using the proper acupuncture points can change the neurological impulses firing in the IT Band and ALL of the muscle groups associated with it. Not only will your pain decrease, but your body will heal, AND acupuncture also decreases the possibility of reoccurrence of the same injury.
