Late Summer

As we are slowly transitioning into our last month of summer in Minnesota, we thought it would be a good time to talk about a “bonus” season we have in TCM that isn’t often talked about in the west. Late Summer is observed as the period of time between the third week of August until the fall equinox (September 22nd). Below are some pieces of helpful information about late summer- taking these parts of the season into account help people make sense of how they are feeling in their bodies throughout the next 6 weeks or so.

  1. Element: earth

  2. Color: yellow

  3. Organs: Stomach & Spleen

  4. Climate: dampness

  5. Body tissue: muscle & flesh

  6. Sense organ: mouth & lips

  7. Sound: singing

  8. Odor: sweet & fragrant

  9. Emotion: worry & pensiveness

  10. Time of day: 7-11am

There are many feelings and symptoms that may come up over the course of the next few weeks that can be explained with TCM 5 element theory. Many people may experience digestive disharmonies, a propensity to worry, a feeling of heaviness in the limbs or mind, low energy, and/or sugar cravings. With TCM, we strive to work in harmony and be in balance with the seasons. Being drawn to nature is very normal at this time and we encourage patients to lean into that and play or simply sit outside. We will be sharing some TCM food therapy recipes soon to help support the Spleen and Stomach during late summer. If you are feeling like you need a little extra support during this time, come see us!
